Locked Workday

Joe Bruno

This coming up Monday the 23rd of December at 10:00 we will be having another workday, inventory day, to add to our ever-growing items that were donated here recently.  Today we identified some areas that can be streamlined to further assist in this process.  We were hoping that some of the other members of the club would step up to the plate and help with the inputting of the data, obviously not.  We will be moving on though in light of this.

Harold has graciously printed out more of the labels we have been using.  This will assist in adding the next batch of items to our inventory.  This inventory has also brought to our attention the need to make sure that, Tubes, if you will, do not fall into the category of trash and end up in the dump.  Some of these items have shown to be very very valuable to the Ham Radio community as well as antique radio collecting/restoring.  The funds generated from this little expedition will pay for at least one radio I think.  That makes it worth it in my book!  One of our biggest goals was to restore the donors’ faith in Ham Radio, from what I have been led to believe we did accomplish this.

Radio Fiesta is coming up, and this Monday we will also try to determine what will and what will not be taken to radio fiesta.  This onslaught of tubes has made us take note of the value of these items and what we should do with them to keep the “good ones” in circulation.  Even the bad ones could be inserted into a non-working radio set to just show what was once used to make long distant communications possible.  I guess all they have to do is glow!  At this point in time, I think it would be in our best interest to solicit these tubes to the on-line tube re-sellers to get us more bang for our buck and keep our involvement to a bare minimum.  But an inventory needs to be done to determine what we do have.  Some of the items that we are putting into the system need to be either trashed or recycled.  Most of this should be on a case by case basis to be determined at the time of picking it up and inspecting it.  For all practical purposes once an item is handled a dispensation should be made as to what happens to it.  Handling items numerous times is basically bordering on insanity!  We need to get a little better at this.

Any and all who wish to join us this coming up Monday please feel free to do so…

I am out of town and cannot make it.

Tubes can be very valuable.  Tested tubes even more so.  Matched pairs on top of that.

Some tubes like large nixies and those sought by audiophiles should be tested and sold on a site like ebay.  I would be happy to test some tubes on my Hickok 752.  I also own a Nixie test unit.

Tubes like Tungsol 5881, USA made 6550 and 2A3’s are some of the ones I can name off the top of my head but there are many others.

That being said, I would be interested in buying up to four EL34s and four 6V6’s for an amplifier project I have at the market rate the group decides on.

We also want to be careful not to flood the market with tubes.

Have instructions been distributed on how/where/when the suggested value/pricing could/should be implemented?  The new web site has at least two spread sheets with inventory data listed.

I will try hard to make the workday for a couple of hours.

At this point in time I have not made any decisions on the tubes or what is going to happen to ANYTHING yet.   All of this will be determined at a later date and time.   This is one of the reasons that we didn't want the inventory put out to anyone in the first place.  All that does is generate questions that at this point in time have no answers.  For those of you who just don't know, I myself started working on tube type equipment back in the 60's.   So yes I cut my teeth on tube type equipment.   I'm not immune to the value of what we have and sure don't want it given or thrown away.

Please, either help or give us time to get this done...  our common goal is to do what is best for the SARC.

Gary,
Harold has created a complete procedure for inventorying and pricing items. Its a PDF file on the site with inventory. The 2 inventories you see ( excel spreadsheets) are the same, the one that is 48mb is size was the first input with huge pictures. I reduced the size of the pictures and created the same inventory with smaller pictures so spreadsheet is considerably smaller is size about 2 mb.

Its something to consider when we create an inventory that it is compact enough to be emailed - 48mb file size is not.

OK, here is a stupid question.  I have looked at the spreadsheet of the items inventoried.  I want to print some of them out to use as working copies BUT for the life of me I have figured out how to accomplish that task.  Normal printed execution just prints one column of gibberish.  What am I missing?

I am using normal paper in landscape mode.  If it was printing properly it would print two pages for each page.  It prints a vertical line of gibberish about 1/8 inch wide.  Very weird.

The workday that we had on the 23rd of December was very productive.  A little of the inventory was added but what we did was isolate the items that will be taken to Radio Fiesta.  It looks like we will have items that can and will be used to assist in Ham Radio.  We are assigning individuals a list of items to do the research on prices on what we will be selling at the hamfest.  At this point in time, we already have a bid on one of our items.  Hopefully, we will get our feet wet on what is being looked for in our little hobby, aka “The Money Pit”.

On the off chance that there are hams that are not aware of the Radio Fiesta Hamfest that is put on by The San Antonio Radio Club, please let any ham that you might know of about this wonderful event that we put on every year.  The more individuals that attend, the better the event it will be, and it will add to the success of one of the events that we put on.  Please pass it on that it will be more than one day.  We will also be having a better selection of door prizes.  I believe Mr. Guzman has acquired better door prizes along with a better grand prize.  Don’t say anything to him it will just go to his head!

As an internal message to our group: hopefully, it will be more than likely one of our most profitable events of the season.  And to those members who have a desire to look for certain tubes or anything else we might have, please make us aware of that particular item that you are looking for.  This might be a little premature but the sooner we get that list we can add those items to another list to be on the lookout for.  I myself would like us to be doing things for the members of our club rather than just trying to be a profit machine.  Within reason of course.  FYI:  I myself have been on the bad end of a club who did NOT look out for its members.  Please make note that our clubs members come first before anything else.  Again, within reason!

I hope everyone has a great Xmas and has the best New Year ever!  Col. Harold has been given the green light to purchase the radio of his dreams…
