SARC Membership Meeting

Sept. 11, 2014: Meeting was called to order at 7:03 PM

Presentation by Bob Rodriguez about the San Antonio Zoo. We learned interesting facts such as:

• Two headed turtles are common but short-lived.
• What’s the difference between a monkey and an ape? Apes have no tail, monkeys do.
• Hippos are very territorial. Despite being herbivores they are the most deadly to humans due to their aggression. Fish clean their teeth.
• The SA Zoo has one of only 3 mating pairs of Okapis. This rare animal has the rear of the zebra, body of a horse, head of a giraffe and a 1 foot long tongue.
• Why do elephants fling sand on their back? As a sunscreen and dirt smothers parasites living on the back. How can you tell the difference between an African and a Asian elephant? Ear size. African earlobe is huge. Asian smaller. Asian female elephant does not have tusks. Ears help elephant cool off but not by fanning, the fanning causes blood to flow and cools the blood like a radiator.
• Lions hate water. Tigers love it. 3 main breeds of tigers: Sumatran (smallest), Bengal (medium) and Siberian (largest).
• Giraffes only live 15-20 years, in captivity up to 25.

Treasurer’s report, as submitted. (SACU account at 9190.29). Trasactions include 1 check written for postage for Ham Fest and an ink cartridge. Made deposit of 120.00 today. 1 Vendor (Main Trading) has already committed to Radio Fiesta. Motion to approve by Bryce Weathersby and Seconded by Joe Thaxton.

Radio Fiesta Ham-fest. First one of the year. Volunteers are needed for 2 hours per shift. Free armband for entrance into Radio Fiesta ($10 value) for volunteering. Members discussed interesting swap-meet stories from past Radio Fiestas.

Esmeralda is seeking a Co-Secretary so she can attend USCG Auxiliary meetings which occur at the same time and date as SARC. Esmeralda will attend every other meeting in 2015. Landon will take notes for the October and November meetings.

JOTA - Jamboree on the Air is Oct. 18. Boy Scouts get together around the world for this event. Event will be at MgGimsey Scout Park on NW military Drive under the Cub Scout pavilion.

There is a small ham store called Grumpy's at 2002 CeeGee off Broadway/Arrow north of 410.

New Business

• Officer Nominations will be taken this month and next month. The election is in November. A ballot will be mailed to all paid members. New officers start Jan 1.

Cray Lester – Vice President nominee.
Esmeralda Valague- Secretary (incumbent 2014, nominee 2015).
Bryce Weathersby and Lew Archer are seeking re-election to his Board seat.

SARC has a new member, Emmet, who is 10 years old and holds a General license!

Public Service Events:

·         Police Explorer competition. Last weekend in October.

·         MS 150, Sat. Oct. 11 and 12.

Lew Archer announced that at10pm on Saturday nights there is an insomniac net. 443.025, Positive. Tone 82.5.

Bryce Weathersby offered a Motion to Adjourn, Seconded by Lew Archer. Motion carries.
