Another COVID-19 related "casualty"
It is with a sad heart that I am letting everybody know that the 2020 BikeMS: Valero Ride to the River bicyling event, previously scheduled for October 3rd and 4th, has become a casualty as a result of the covid-19 crisis.
The National MS Society plans to hold a virtual event to raise funds for the national MS Society on October 17th. Therefore there will be no need this year for ham radio volunteers to staff SAG Vehicles, rest stops, net control, or shadows for event officials. It also means no free tshirts for you this year. The Wildflower 100 bicycle ride normally held in April during Fiesta, had been rescheduled for November of this year, but the Fiesta Commission pulled the plug a while back on all Fiesta events. This means that we will not be having any major bicycle rides in the San Antonio area until 2021. There may be an opportunity with some of the larger bike teams or clubs holding events on weekends, who might welcome some extra SAG support, ect, but that would be using your personal vehicles. I have not been requested by anyone to provide such support so far this year. If any Public Service events do pop up between now and the end of the year, like the Veterans Day Parade in Universal City on the first Saturday of the month, I will post it to SanAntoniohams.Org as soon as I find out. Bob, Underground cables has some major advantages: Lower receiver noise Extends cable life Wiring hidden from neighbors Etc…
Don’t forget to install cable Pull wire. (Twice the pipe length)
Above all…Have fun.

I am thinking to do something similar, but running cable underground after conduit exits the external wall. Thanks, Bob

Bob, I built my house in Bulverde. I installed 2 each 2in pvc pipes that are in the slab. These come out about 6 inches below ground on the outside and the inside, they come out in the wall behind the operating desk. My tower is about 100 ft away from the house. All cables are underground.

Additional info: the wall is dry wall on inside and stone on outside. With that said, the house is currently being built and I have opportunity to have something professionally installed. I just need to be able to convey what I want.

Personally I've helped Greg, the hard line guy, put up his towers and install his coax, please read that as sewer pipe. I could be wrong but one of his hard lines is 2" I think. If you want to see an antenna installation that is second to none, ask him if he wouldn't mind you looking at his. Now let's put this into perspective; the sink in your kitchen probably has 2" pipes for the drain. Then think of that same size being the size of your coax, hard line. That is actually what the word "amazing" means... Joe Bruno 210-363-9500 W5AUQ

MFJ has window panels with everything you need. You just need a window to mont it in. I’ve used them for years. Works great! No damage to house what so ever. Lou WA5LOU

Re: Running cable through wall
When my wife, Pat AD5BR, got the ham bug, we decided to drill a big hole thru the side wall using a hole saw cutter the size of a dryer vent. We then ran a piece of suitably sized PVC pipe thru the hole and sealed the edges of the hole. We put 45° curved connectors on the ends, facing downward. After running ladder line for our HF loop (loop needs repairs now), rotor controller cable, and the normal high end coax for our 2m/440 antenna, we soaked large sponges with insecticide and stuffed them in the pipe to block unwanted critters and air flow. This arrangement allowed us to make changes over the years, while being able to physically separate the various cables to reduce interference. But it does have that permanent dryer vent size hole in the wall. Lee Besing 210-771-7075 San Antonio TX

I think I have seen them at altex before as well. When I leave it is easy to patch the holes so there is no sign of the hole for future residence.

MFJ makes a board that can be and installed in a window. It has coax barrel connectors and other type connectors. I used window locks in the window channel and had my alarm company add sensors in new locations on the window.
I didn't get any flack from my wife when I brought the cables in to my office using the MFJ panel. At other residents I went through and she wasn't happy with me. what kind of wall? how thick? if you drill through wall, you need to proceed carefully so you don't drill through electric wires, etc.

Re: Field Day 2020
Cray / K5MUG
Hello, Joe, good to hear from you.
Yes, it was a fun time. I haven’t worked many contests/events for quite a while so I’m looking at the calendar for a few more targets. I have a few newly built lightweight antennas to tune and test for more ‘5w and a wire’ options. Proof-tested a new small lightweight single lever Torsion Bar Paddle Portable key from W1SFR / Steve Roberts ( w1sfr.com ). It performed very well without the base plate using poster putty to stabilize the key, another top-notch key from Steve. It has also proven itself with honors as cootie key. I think the months ahead will be filled with many changes and limitations for many things because of ‘Rona’, so I’m hoping to increase my chances of participation with alternative plans, options, and equipment. Sometimes it’ll work, sometimes not. Just have to hang in there!
Looking forward to open meetings and face to face activities, Wishing you good health and the best of luck,
Qrp CW Rocks, 5w and a wire! 72, 73, Cray / K5MUG

Hmmm, sounds like you had a blast. I didn't participate in field day this year. Numerous reasons. I'm going to get ready for it next year for sure, just in case we're still in lockdown mode. Thanks for sharing your results.
