By San Antonio Radio Club - SARC

Silent Key W5PKE

Mr. Curtis Edward Swafford, born on July 24, 1941 in Riceville, Tennessee, passed away at age 77 on September 17, 2018 in San Antonio, Texas. He graduated from Calhoun High School and TN Wesleyan College. Curtis served in the Air Force and he devoted his career to working at Randolph Air Force Base - Civil Service. Curtis is survived by his son, Mark Morga and wife Tara Morga; daughter, Christine Garza and husband Mark Garza; sister, Faye Burger and husband Carey Burger; and grandchildren, AnneMarie Garza, Stephanie Garza, Karina Morga, and Gabriela Morga. Some of Curtis' hobbies were ham radio - w5pke and bowling league.

Normally that would be the end of his story, but his family graciously allowed members of SARC to attend an estate sale of his treasure trove of years of collecting amateur radio equipment. Apparently, Curtis was into a lot more hobbies than just ham radio and bowling. He was into graphics art and computers from what we could see.

His memory will live on as other club members use his equipment to talk around the world. By the huge stack of QCL cards sitting by his desk, he made many contacts around the world. (A QSL card is a written confirmation of either a two-way radio communication between two amateur radio stations)

Curtis is gone but not forgotten by members of San Antonio Radio Club. While many of us did not know him while he was alive, we bonded with him through purchasing his equipment. His legacy will live on though many SARC members using his equipment once more to talk around the world.

I was thinking that there was a few more items that I left and wondering if
they were going to open again.

I’ll help if I can pick some stuff for me- not ham stuff but other items.

Great idea for Radio Fiesta-

I have made a request to purchase what has been left over from the sale.
Have not heard back from them yet, but I might hear back from them tomorrow,
July the 1st.

They have to be out of the house by Wednesday the 3rd. Time was not set
up very well, but when is it ever!

The Silent Key was very active in 2 meters I believe. Lloyd mentioned that
it might be an opportunity for the club to make some extra money for this
coming up Radio Fiesta. I guess what I am asking is would anyone be willing
to help load up what is left to move it to the storage facility so that we
would be killing as many stones as possible, helping a SK and possibly
making some extra money for the club. I myself have my eyes on some of the
test equipment and maybe a few other items.

On a side note Rosendo said it’s kind of like Field Day, all work and no
play! I also made a few contacts with some of the “Bad Guys” on the south
side. They would be willing to take on the task of working us over aka
beating the stuffing out of us, but there were a few concerns: A; How many
of us would there be? B; Where would this be done? C; Would other clubs
be interested? D; Cash up front, of course. There was a concern that
since there are so many Field Day activities here in San Antonio that they
suggested that they outsource this to someone out of this area so an extra
fuel charge would be added. Of course we would be getting a group rate to
help offset the added fuel charge. Any thoughts on this?

Back to the silent key, any help on this?

Thanks for the reminder. I made it to the sale, and picked up a CW straight key, 50' of copper grounding wire, and a box of pulleys, turnbuckles, and hose clamps.

Agree.  I bought several pieces of Heathkit gear and a pile of books.  Need to make sure the house buyer doesn't trash dump the contents.

4 sure he was a “collector” – I had to stop or I would be in same class. Picked up a few things. It’s a shame there is so much stuff to go through it would take a week. There is actually a small fortune in stuff there.

Thanks, Harold. just may do that.  Been very busy getting my solar power set up and tested along with building and setting up a new antenna for this FD.  Plan to finish the build and get it tuned tomorrow so it’s ready to do the formal install on Saturday morning.  Last minute fun!

EXTRA! EXTRA! EXTRA! EXTRA!FIELD DAY 2019Field Day 2019is nigh upon us!All SARC members are encouraged to participate in Field Day. Yes, you can bring all of your own equip-ment, but you don’t have to bring all of your equip-ment or even any equipment. SARC will have a radio operations tent like pastyears with tables and chairs set up inside it. This tent will be provided with emergency power to operate the radios, com-puters, and lights in it. Antennas will be set up mostly to the west side of the radiooperations tent with coax cables run from the antennas back to the tent. Yes, there is space for more antennas. This year, SARC will operate four HF stations, one VHF/UHF station, and one Get On the Air (GOTA) station. SARC has a number of Amateur Extra licensed members who will operate as control operators so those with Technician and General licenses will be able to operate on Ex-tra frequencies. Those without a license will be able to operate with control operators. The term “operate” means touch the equipment and transmit and receive with it. The GOTA station is specifically targeted at new Technicians, but unlincensed people can use it as well with a con-trol operator. If you have problems getting on some bands at home due to restrictions, this is your chance. You may participate in as much or as little of Field Day as you want. You do NOT need to commit to the whole weekend. You can commit to the whole weekend, but you do NOThave to commit to the whole weekend.Yes, we will be participating in the ARRL Field Day Contest part for points, but we intend to have fun first, experiment and learn second, and, last, earn points. We do not plan to win our category. Hence, there is no pressure on making contacts. Mostly, we do the contact part just to see how well we do wth a laid back attidude. Don’t forget: we are an eating club with a radio problem. If you can only come to a part of Field Day, arrange to be there at 6:00 p. m., on Sat-urday, June 22, 2019, for Grady’s BBQ.

Hello All,

I’ll be operating FD this weekend as K5MUG, Class 1e, Section STX, from my patio at home, I plan most of Saturday and Sunday (or as long as I can hold out).  I’ll be concentrating on 40m/20m with solar power to my Elecraft Kx3 at Qrp/5w CW into a N/S oriented dipole on a push-up pole at 31 feet.  Based on practice runs last week and so far this week with 5w and my home antenna (dipole at 40ft) it’ll be a challenge but I’m looking forward to making it happen and just counting up when it’s over, fun times!

Good luck and 73,
