Intruder on two meters - perhaps not
WN4VCH
Email received from a New Braunfels ham regarding the two meter
'truckers' that I heard today. This is likely who I heard - not intruders after all. "actually there are two truckers that _are_ hams in this area. they haul dirt or something. been around for years. they hang on 147.00 (usually) and 147.14, and have heard 'em on 443.500 (the saltgrass system ?)"

Stubborn and hard-headed as I am, I decided not to take the word of the experts, but to put my second theory below to the test. I could not test the first one without violating the law.

I set my Yaesu VX-6R on 146.520, with a squelch setting of 2. I set my Yaesu FT-757GX to 29.304 Mhz, AM, at 100 watts, with the mike gain turned all the way up. My antenna is a long-wire going into an MFJ roller inductor tuner. I made some test transmissions on AM on 29.304, with my VX-6R held at arms length away. I was able to hear my voice through the VX-6R. Even though it was very distorted, my transmission was clear enough to be understood, and caused audio feedback. I tuned down to 146.510 and up to 146.530 and did not hear myself. Then I switched to FM on 29.304 and made some more test transmissions. I was able to hear my voice clearly through the VX-6R, with no distortion. Then I moved the VX-6R across the room from the radio, about 10 feet or so. I was still able to hear my voice clearly while transmitting on 29.304. I was not able to hear anything on 146.510 nor 146.530. So I stand by the idea that it is theoretically possible to hear two people talking on 29.304 in AM or FM mode, with an FM receiver tuned to 146.520, if you are in close proximity to them and they are running some power. I'm not saying that this is what WN5VCH heard, because it sounds like that was not the case. The test is easily repeatable if you doubt my results. I never claimed to be the expert, and I'll be the first one to admit that if I can pass the Extra class test, it is way too easy. Also, I guess I started the mudslinging by insulting the knuckle-heads, so I should have expected no less than an impolite response. Disclaimer: Before I get taken out by the sharpshooters, I want to say that I am aware that 29.304 is out of the FM subband on 10 meters, as defined by gentleman's agreement in the ARRL bandplan. However, Part 97 authorizes "phone" in that band and does not specify which flavor. Further, Part 97.305b states that "A station may transmit a test emission on any frequency authorized to the control operator for brief periods for experimental purposes...".

The fifth harmonic of 27.185 (CB channel 19) is 135.925. Add a power mike and you get splatter. Add a linear and you get powerful splatter. To me that puts these guys in the ballpark even if they were operating on legitimate CB frequencies, especially if you were real close to them. Another variation on this scenario might be that they are operating some of those truck stop special 10-meter radios (25-30mhz) illegally. The 5th subharmonic of 146.520 is 29.304. A lot of these Galaxy/President/ whatever radios have an FM mode also. This doesn't make it any better than if they were talking on 2 meter radios, but it sounds more plausible to me that a couple of truck drivers would be using these rather than intentionally using 2 meter VHF radios. Third possibility - these guys actually were hams who just got lazy and didn't give their call signs because they thought no one was listening. I have talked to many OTR drivers with amateur licenses. Fourth possibility - Gosh, they might actually have two meter radios and be on the national calling frequency, and not have a license. Given some of the conversations I've overheard on 146.520 around here, trash-talking truckers might be an improvement. ;-) Just trying to make it interesting guys... ----- Original Message ---- From: Mike Check <k5ucq@arrl.net> To: W5SC@yahoogroups. com Sent: Thursday, February 1, 2007 8:39:01 PM Subject: [W5SC] Intruder on two meters - New Braunfels HF to VHF? Need Mosley RV-4C Vertical Antenna Information
davidftx <davidftx@...>
I am trying to help Floyd, KE5HBF, put up a Mosley RV-4C vertical
antenna that he bought at SwapFest. All of the information on the Mosley website indicates that this antenna wants to be mounted on a 2 inch mast. What's missing is the base mount. The guy who sold it to him apparently had it mounted on the roof. The 5/8" tubing of this 21 foot trapped vertical was resting on a cone shaped piece of ceramic, which may have been part of the original mount, but it certainly wasn't all of it. This piece of ceramic is 3" long and is about 1/2" at the top, then tapers out to about 1". The seller had the cone mounted on a 4" x 8" piece of aluminum that was curved to fit the peak of a roof. The antenna had rested on the small end of the ceramic cone, but only came down about 5/8". The whole thing had to be supported elsewhere to stay up and I suspect he guyed it several times. It still couldn't have been very stable. Floyd and I would like to mount this on a 2" (or other diameter) mast, up maybe 10' to get it above his eave. Has anyone ever had one of these Mosley verticals? I would be glad to try to fabricate a mount but would like to start with some idea of what originally was used. Thanks for any input. David K5OLE

Skywarn Training for South Texas
davidftx <davidftx@...>
Larry Eblen, from the National Weather Service, gave a great
presentation at last night's meeting about Skywarn and amateur radio's value to the NWS. He has posted the following information regarding Skywarn training in South Texas which starts tomorrow in Austin. Please note that the San Antonio date is the same as the regularly scheduled VE test session. This will be a large session and we are needing volunteers to assist. ------------------------------------------------------------------------\ - All, This is just a short reminder - our schedule of regional Skywarn Conferences begins tomorrow. You can find a schedule of all our Skywarn Training Classes - both regional and county programs - on the web at: www.srh.noaa.gov/ewx/html/skytrn.htm <http://www.srh.noaa.gov/ewx/html/skytrn.htm> The first regional Conference will be held in Austin from 8:15 am to 4:15 pm tomorrow at the J.J. Pickle Center on Burnet Road. Details are available at: www.utexas.edu/depts/grg/kimmel/SKYWARN2007.html <http://www.utexas.edu/depts/grg/kimmel/SKYWARN2007.html> The second regional Conference will be held in Uvalde from 9:00am to 3:30 pm on Saturday, February 17, in Tate Auditorium at Southwest Texas Junior College. Details are available at: www.srh.noaa.gov/ewx/html/uvagenda.pdf <http://www.srh.noaa.gov/ewx/html/uvagenda.pdf> . The third regional Conference will be held in San Antonio from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturday, February 24, in Bonilla Science Hall at the University of the Incarnate Word. Details are available at: www.srh.noaa.gov/ewx/html/skygenda.pdf <http://www.srh.noaa.gov/ewx/html/skygenda.pdf> Our final regional Conference will be held in Kerrville from 8:00 am to 12:15 pm on Saturday, March 3, at the Inn of the Hills. Details are available at: www.srh.noaa.gov/ewx/html/keragenda.pdf <http://www.srh.noaa.gov/ewx/html/keragenda.pdf> . Each of these will include a Basic Skywarn Class as well as an Advanced Skywarn Class, with some outstanding additional speakers on topics from safety to building partnerships to reading radar. They are open to all - spotters, emergency managers and planners, first responders, Amateur Radio Operators, city and county officials, teachers, students - and the public in general. There is no charge - just show up and learn. ------------ One short mention about weather. . .we will see another strong cold front move into South Central Texas on Monday morning. With warm, moist air returning to South Texas on Sunday, and very cold air aloft driving this front, we could have some isolated severe storms Monday morning. They would be more likely to occur along and east of a Bastrop to Lockhart to Seguin to Floresville line. Larry

BexarWire Archives now on w5sc.org
davidftx <davidftx@...>
Paul, N5IUT, spent a lot of time this weekend pdfing the archive of old
BexarWires and putting them on our website at http://www.w5sc.org/Publications.html <http://www.w5sc.org/Publications.html> . Take a look at them. While hustling to get documentation ready for tonight's Board meeting I randomly downloaded the November, 1998 BexarWire, just for fun. What a shock---the more things change the more they stay the same. What I found read like it was written yesterday: * The Flood of '98 had just ocurred and the President wrote his column while being a radio operator at a Red Cross shelter. * Teri Thomas, KC5BJI, had worked countless hours getting ham volunteers for shelters. * SARC was in the throes of trying to be a Special Service Club. Again. * SARC met at the Covenant Presbyterian Church in 1998. There was discussion about moving the meeting time to 7:00pm from 7:30p.m, just as there will be tonight. * Nominees for office included Steve Cerwin, Royce Taylor, Richard Elder, Ginny Check, and Mike Check. * Dues were $15.oo per year. * SARC was having trouble with attendance at their regular monthly meetings! Amazing. Check out Paul's hard work and a little bit of Club history on the website. K5OLE

Re: Please Consider Helping This Tuesday Cleaning up The Club Trailer

Rachael (whose real name is Priscilla) caught me sneaking the PAM out of the pantry and demanded to know what I was up to. When I told her it was for a radio party this afternoon she became very concerned. Very concerned. I explained the whole thing to her and she made me conduct an experiment. She sprayed PAM on part of a painted tin and then rinsed it lightly to simulate rain. Then dried it on low with hair dryer to 1. dry it of course, and 2. subject it to mild heat. I used Tri-Flow on another part of the tin. Tri-Flow is the only Teflon based lubricant in the garage. Both the PAM and Tri-Flow remained on the tin, with PAM appearing to be a little more resistant to the light rinsing. I took them out to the garage and spray painted the tin to see what effect each of them has. The tin is drying now.

Rachael offers the following observations: PAM is vegetable oil mixed with magic so it will stick. She believes it will attract critters. It is very expensive to do a side of a trailer with PAM. When I suggested Wesson Oil on a mop, she took my car keys away from me. She says Wesson Oil will just run and create a big mess. She thinks, if the Teflon/paint test works, that Teflon is a better choice. She has no clue how much Teflon lubricant costs and I didn't tell her. She wishes us all the best of luck but, as with all radio activities, she refuses to get involved beyond providing a little adult supervision.

These are definitely things that break down and smell bad after a while, and attract bugs. Dupont Teflon multi-use lubricant should be available from any bike shop (used for bike chains), but it is six bucks a can. Another possibility might be Armor-All. It contains silicone and is cheaper than Teflon. ----- Original Message ---- From: "davidftx@swbell.net" <davidftx@swbell.net> To: W5SC@yahoogroups.com Sent: Tuesday, February 20, 2007 11:38:44 AM Subject: Re: [W5SC] Please Consider Helping This Tuesday Cleaning up The Club Trailer That's right. VE session success -- Thanks and Congratulations
Pat Knight AD5BR <ad5br@...>
Yesterday, February 14, the San Antonio Radio Club sponsored a VE
session at Broadway National Bank. Many thanks go to Paul Guido and David Freiberger for all their help preparing for the event. We had 28 pre-registered candidates, and wanted to be prepared for an unknown number of walk-ins. (It turns out that our 4 no-shows balanced our 4 walk-ins.) Congratulations go to 3 new Technicians, 18 new Generals, and 4 new Extras. 25 of 28 candidates were successful in earning new licenses or upgrades. Of the 18 Generals, 6 were paperwork upgrades (one of whom wound up with the Green Team). We had one person who went from zero to Extra, and four more new hams. We appreciate the Broadway National Bank allowing us the use of their facilities, and Paul Guido for arranging our use of the bank. Paul did all sorts of things to help us be ready for a crowd, including making signs, doing web updates, and making behind-the-scenes arrangements. David Freiberger did many things including transporting extra tables and chairs, getting a small printer/copier, and preparing hand-out materials. We gained some new members at the session, but David will need to share that count. We invited all test candidates to join us at KCOMM to use the club station. Lee N5NTG and Bob W2IK were there to help. David K5OLE made sure the station was ready ahead of time. Thanks to you three, and thanks to everyone who was at KCOMM to make the newly licensed or upgrades hams feel welcome. The following VEs and non-VE volunteers made the VE session possible. Although each of them has received separate thanks, be sure to thank the following volunteers for helping with the successful session. Non-VEs: David Freiberger - Money Guy (registration table) Charlie Land KC5NKK - directed candidates where to go Lew Archer KD5MSW - many support tasks, wherever he was needed John Goates (AD5BR's son) - Elevator Guy VEs: Upgrade Team Bob Hejl W2IK Richard Schuh AE5RS Norm Fulkerson AD5EF Blue Team Jim Wells W5CPA David Espinoza W5QS Benny Martinez NU5P Bill Reichert WE5ET Yellow Team Bruce Parkes KA2ZGW Pat Willingham KA5RIO Gil Mathis AA5XH Shane O'Neal NS5D Green Team Charlie Brown N9RU Carol Brown N5CMB Bill Heberling WD5EDR Facilitators/Backup VEs Paul Guido N5IUT Pat Knight AD5BR Redirecting those who showed up at Covenant Lee Besing N5NTG Thanks go to all of you! 73, Pat AD5BR
