Volunteer for a Two Hour Shift this Saturday and Receive Extra Drawing Tickets
davidftx <davidftx@...>
The San Antonio Radio Club SwapFest is this Saturday and we need workers
for two hour shifts to work the door and generally assist N5RXS with the operation of the event. By volunteering for a two hour shift you help the Club put on this fine event and still have plenty of time to visit all of the vendors and participate in the forums. All volunteers will receive an extra SwapFest drawing ticket for each hour worked, with a two hour minimum. By helping the Club you will be helping your own chance of winning one of the great door prizes. Please volunteer your time for the SwapFest by emailing J.C. Smith at n5rxs@satx.rr.com <mailto:n5rxs@satx.rr.com> and let him know of your availability. By breaking the work into two hour shifts, everyone gets to enjoy the SwapFest. The additional drawing tickets for assisting with the SwapFest are in addition to those awarded for helping with setup on Thursday evening and include volunteers for the talk-in and VE session. Help us put on the best Winter hamfest in Texas

Annual San Antonio QRP QRP Breakfast
Monty N5ESE <n5ese@...>
In memory of our dear friend Fred Bonavita, K5QLF (SK),
who so enjoyed this breakfast, we'll again enjoy our annual QRP Breakfast & Show-and-Tell before the San Antonio Swapfest opens. Please join me and bring your homebrew (or other) QRP stuff for "show-and-tell" at 7 AM at: Taqueria Guanajuato in the community of Mingus Corner, near the intersection of FM 2536 and Loop 1604. The place opens at 6 AM, and breakfast will start around 7 (+/-). Mingus Corner is about 1 mile south of the swap site, and the taqueria is on the left (if your southbound). The swap again will be at Little Joe's Country Gold, which is on FM 2536. Set up starts at 7 AM for those who purchased tables, and the doors open at 8 AM. Here's a map for those who get lost every year (like I do): http://www.io.com/~n5fc/swapfest_in_san_antonio.gif Below, is Fred's narrative description of how to get to the taqueria (it's easy to miss in the dark), from last year's invitation message. Please let me have a head count (for the QRP breakfast), if you plan to attend, just mainly so I can post potential participation and stake out a table or two when I get there. For those coming from the north on I-35 or US 281 or from the east on I-10, get on I-35 south toward Laredo. Take Loop 410 west from I-35 South. Take the second exit from I-35 onto FM 2536, go left under the overpass and go 1.6 miles. Little Joe's is on the right, and the taqueria is about 1 mile south, on the left. For those coming from the south on I-37 or I-35, turn west at Loop 1604, follow it to FM 2536, turn right and look for the taqueria on the right. Those coming from the west, take Loop 1604 to the south, turn left at FM 2536 and watch for the taqueria. 73, monty N5ESE Good advice from Mom: "Play Nice!" ;-) Monty Northrup, N5ESE (ex-N5FC) Austin, Texas e-mail: n5ese@io.com web page (ham): http://www.dit-dididit-dit.com web page (home): http://www.io.com/~maddog ______ _ _/ \_/ \ /\/ _ \_ \ |/ /_) \/ ZZZz || _ | / |\ /_) / | / \ \_ |_ | / \ \_ __ \ \_/ \_ (__) | / \ \_______/

I know that speak for many South Texas hams that Fred's passion and enthusiasm for Amateur Radio and QRP will be missed on Saturday. I will try to stop by for a quick taco before going to work at the Swapfest door. Re: QRP Breakfast TOMORROW!
Monty N5ESE <n5ese@...>
Well, I hope the San Antonio QRPers got together and had the QRP Breakfast & Show-and-Tell. I doubt very seriously that any from Austin made it down there. I started south on I-35 at 5 AM this morning, and made it about 2 exits at 25 mph in the downpouring rain (hydroplaning at 45 mph), and realized it was not just dumb, but crazy to continue. So as much as I enjoy the QRP comraderie, we had to blow it off entirely.

I don't know what kind of turn out the QRPers had, but I hope that at least some of them got together. I got up at 3:00am with the lightning and was at the SwapFest before 6:00am to help set up. Some Austinites did make it though and we were glad to see them. Of course during the SwapFest we heard that they were shutting down streets in Austin and about the tornado in San Marcos. No telling where those guys are now, they may be camping out in Cabela's parking lot in Buda. David K5OLE

Newsletter articles, pictures, classified ads, funny items needed this week!
Pat Knight AD5BR <ad5br@...>
Please send replies to BexarWire@gmail.com and not to the W5SC Yahoo group.
Help promote ham radio! A fun, informative club newsletter can do that, and your contributions can help that happen. Please share whatever you think the rest of us might enjoy in the club newsletter. Send any funny stories, links to interesting web sites, helpful ham hints, as well as news articles. Photos, ham-related comics, and clean jokes are also welcome! We also can run ads for your junk, I mean treasure, that didn't sell at the Swapfest, and your wanted-to-buy listings. Surely we all have or need something that we could exchange with another member! Contributions for our club newsletter, the Bexar Wire, are needed this week so we can mail an issue that promotes our February 8 meeting in time for members to read about it before the meeting takes place! Please send anything for the newsletter to BexarWire@gmail.com We are still looking for an editor, but OLE drafted a mule-skinner to make sure this issue goes to press. 73, Pat AD5BR

Codeless Amateur Radio Testing Regime Appears Set to Begin February 23
Paul Guido
QST
From the ARRL.org web site. http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2007/01/19/101/ NEWINGTON, CT, Jan 19, 2007 -- The ARRL has learned that the FCC's Report and Order (R&O) in the "Morse code proceeding," WT Docket 05- 235, is scheduled to appear in the Federal Register Wednesday, January 24. Assuming that occurs, the new Part 97 rules deleting any Morse code examination requirement for Amateur Radio license applicants would go into effect Friday, February 23, 2007. The League cautions that this date is tentative, pending official confirmation and publication.

Ham Help Needed Sunday, January 21st - Public Service Event
One Time Message - Public Service Event Opportunity
Charlie Land, KC5NKK just informed me via email that we still could use about 3-4 more hams for the River Road Run on Sunday (January 21st). Location is up north of New Braunfels. This is a 12 mile run, 6 miles out and back, with 3 break points, start/finish line, plus the lead and chase "turtle" vehicle. We usually get a free t-shirt out of the deal, plus they are having a free party afterward. Starting point is at Camp Hueco Springs on River Road. We need to be in place no later than 7:30am. Race scheduled to start at 8am and race officials expect to have only about 100 runners due to weather constraints (rainy, cool temps) so the event shouldn't take very long. I would expect it to be over by 11am at the latest. http://www.sanantoniohams.org/calendar/index.htm#01212007RiverRoad Course Map at this link http://www.usatf.org/routes/view.asp?rID=82962 Should be okay for mobile radio or HT radio using the 147.14 repeater If interested in helping, call me direct using my cell # below. Leave message if I can't answer right away and I will call you back ASAP. _________________________________________ 73 de N5NTG Lee W. The North American QSO Party begins Saturday at Noon (local time)
davidftx <davidftx@...>
The SSB North American QSO Party (NAQP) is from 1800z January 20th
through 0600z January 21st. That's noon tomorrow through midnight tomorrow night. This is great contest for those who don't normally contest for a couple of reasons. First, power is limited to 100 watts for all stations so you are not competing with huge stations. Secondly it is a great way to finish your Worked All States and it is entirely possible to work all 50 states in the 12 hours, or 10 hours for single operator stations. The exchange is your state plus your name so my report would be TX David or Tango Xray David. No serial numbers. All the non WARC HF bands will be used and Novice and Technicians with Code can use SSB between 28.3 MHz and 28.5MHz. There is also a QRP classification. This is a fun, short contest. See the rules here: http://www.ncjweb.com/naqprules.php <http://www.ncjweb.com/naqprules.php> Email me at davidftx@swbell.net <mailto:davidftx@swbell.net> if you have questions. David K5OLE

Do you want your copy of the Bexar Wire via email only?
Pat Knight AD5BR <ad5br@...>
It's almost time to print and mail the Bexar Wire. Some of you have previously indicated a preference for email delivery only of the Bexar Wire. Please let me know if you'd like to save a tree and use recycled electrons instead!
Actually we will email a link where you can download the newsletter, rather than clogging up your mailbox. If I do not hear from you, you will receive a paper copy. This is not meant to rekindle a forum to discuss mailing vs emailing. Right now I'm trying to accommodate your personal choice for email, if that is your choice. 73, Pat Knight AD5BR
