Morning All!
Hill Country REACT and other regional club/organizations will be assisting with the AERC Heart of the Hills Endurance Ride the weekend of February 28th and March 1st.
The activity involves remote setup of VHF and Packet equipment to monitor the course, safety, search and rescue and track participants.
Each days activities start at 0730 hrs and typically stand down around 1530 hrs depending on the operators station being manned.
Meals are provided for all volunteers.

The remote environment with little to no commercial systems provides a great opportunity to test field deployment gear for emergency/disaster deployments.  This years activities do utilize RMS Express and a RMS Packet/RMS Relay type system.

We also have a need for non-license operators to assist as spotters and recorders.

If you are interested in assisting with the event, please contact Louis - K5STX at k5stx@....

Thank You!

Louis - K5STX

2015 Bandera 100K

Louis Upton

Morning all!
The Bandera 100K is approaching fast on the weekend of January 10th.

Could still use 2 more operators, preferably with digitial/data capability to operate RMS Express.
Even if you do not have this capability, and wish to put in some public service time and EmComm training, you are still welcome.

Please contact me direct at k5stx at k5stx dot net!

Thanks,

Louis

Help needed for this weekend - San Antonio Marathon December 6-7th

Lee Besing

I'm still short of volunteers for this weekend's San Antonio Rock and Roll Marathon.

This year's event will be on 2 days.   They have a 10k event on Saturday morning where we only need 8-10 volunteers total.  The main event is on Sunday morning and we need the full complement of hams to staff about 23 mile markers.

More event details available at http://sanantoniohams.org/blog/?p=7363

Please email me direct (not via the group list), or send me a text, with your name, call sign,  t-shirt size and availability.  This year we're looking at possibly using a 440uhf repeater as an alternate backup repeater, so let me know if your radio does UHF or only VHF (2 meters).  Most positions can be covered with an HT radio.

Thanks in advance.

New SA City Cell Phone Ordinance

J C Smith

All:

Lew Archer sent this message to a number of hams. I wanted to pass it
to all ARES and SARC members.

Attached is a copy of the new city ordinance covering cell phones and
other devices prohibiting there use in moving vehicles.

As you read through this please note subsection (c), (5). It excludes
Amateur Radio Operators. However, some officers might be over enthusatic
in its application. If you do not carry a copy of your FCC license it
might be a good thing to have in the car. If you are stopped and given
a citation, take your license and go to court to show you are excluded
from the ordinance.

Now, let's see if I can attach the ordinance...

This came out of the Chief's Office directed to all officers. I received
it through my association with the Volunteers in Policing organization.

[ISN] ARRL Probing Web Server Breach by Hackers

Mike Check K5UCQ

For those that are ARRL members I have included an e-mail from a security subscription I receive.

If you utilize their website, I would recommend changing your password if it was established prior to April 2010. A hacker may have been able to obtain site usernames and passwords made during that time frame.

October 10, 2014

Last month a web server at ARRL Headquarters was breached by an unknown party. ARRL IT Manager Mike Keane, said that League members have no reason to be concerned about sensitive personal information being leaked, and assures members that there’s nothing of financial value on the compromised server.

Some ARRL servers were taken offline and isolated from the Internet when the hack was discovered. Some web functions were temporarily disabled. The ARRL expects to restore service by close of business, on Wednesday, October 8, 2014

ARRL’s Mike Keane stressed that it is highly unlikely that any sensitive information was compromised. Any information the hacker might have been able to glean from the ARRL server, he said, is already publicly available — data such as names, addresses, and call signs that appear in the FCC database.

The hacker may have been able to obtain site usernames and passwords that were established prior to April 2010, and that have not been changed since then. ARRL members who have not changed their ARRL website passwords since early 2010 should do so at this as soon as possible.
