SARC Membership Meeting

Sept. 11, 2014: Meeting was called to order at 7:03 PM

Presentation by Bob Rodriguez about the San Antonio Zoo. We learned interesting facts such as:

  • Two headed turtles are common but short-lived.
  • What’s the difference between a monkey and an ape? Apes have no tail, monkeys do.
  • Hippos are very territorial. Despite being herbivores they are the most deadly to humans due to their aggression. Fish clean their teeth.
  • The SA Zoo has one of only 3 mating pairs of Okapis. This rare animal has the rear of the zebra, body of a horse, head of a giraffe and a 1 foot long tongue.
  • Why do elephants fling sand on their back? As a sunscreen and dirt smothers parasites living on the back. How can you tell the difference between an African and a Asian elephant? Ear size. African earlobe is huge. Asian smaller. Asian female elephant does not have tusks. Ears help elephant cool off but not by fanning, the fanning causes blood to flow and cools the blood like a radiator.
  • Lions hate water. Tigers love it. 3 main breeds of tigers: Sumatran (smallest), Bengal (medium) and Siberian (largest).
  • Giraffes only live 15-20 years, in captivity up to 25.

Secretary’s Report  – Motion to approve by Bryce Weathersby and Seconded by Lew Archer. Motion carries.

Treasurer’s report, as submitted. (SACU account at 9190.29). Trasactions include 1 check written for postage for Ham Fest and an ink cartridge. Made deposit of 120.00 today. 1 Vendor (Main Trading) has already committed to Radio Fiesta. Motion to approve by Bryce Weathersby and Seconded by Joe Thaxton.

Radio Fiesta Ham-fest. First one of the year. Volunteers are needed for 2 hours per shift. Free armband for entrance into Radio Fiesta ($10 value) for volunteering. Members discussed interesting swap-meet stories from past Radio Fiestas.

Esmeralda is seeking a Co-Secretary so she can attend USCG Auxiliary meetings which occur at the same time and date as SARC. Esmeralda will attend every other meeting in 2015. Landon will take notes for the October and November meetings.

JOTA - Jamboree on the Air is Oct. 18. Boy Scouts get together around the world for this event. Event will be at MgGimsey Scout Park on NW military Drive under the Cub Scout pavilion.

There is a small ham store called Grumpy's at 2002 CeeGee off Broadway/Arrow north of 410.

New Business

  • Officer Nominations will be taken this month and next month. The election is in November. A ballot will be mailed to all paid members. New officers start Jan 1.

Cray Lester – Vice President nominee.
Esmeralda Valague- Secretary (incumbent 2014, nominee 2015).
Bryce Weathersby and Lew Archer are seeking re-election to his Board seat.

SARC has a new member, Emmet, who is 10 years old and holds a General license!

Public Service Events:

·         Police Explorer competition. Last weekend in October.

·         MS 150, Sat. Oct. 11 and 12.

Lew Archer announced that at10pm on Saturday nights there is an insomniac net. 443.025, Positive. Tone 82.5.

Bryce Weathersby offered a Motion to Adjourn, Seconded by Lew Archer. Motion carries.

Re: This weekend's BikeMS MS150 Ride to the River - Hams still needed

Lee Besing

We've still got a few rest stops on the BikeMS Valero Alamo Ride to the River 2 day event, needing to be covered with hams on this Saturday.  If you are interested in being a volunteer break point ham, please contact either myself (lee@...) or Charlie Land KC5NKK (kc5nkk@...).  NO background checks or driver' license record checks are required for break point / rest stop hams, only an online volunteer form to be completed.

Day one route goes from San Antonio thru Seguin over to New  Braunfels, similar to previous years.  But on Day 2, Sunday, the route changes from previous  years.  There are 3 routes on Sunday with different distances, and all three of them start / end at the Comal County Fairgrounds in New Braunfels.  Most communications will be via 2 meter repeater, with some simplex operations on 440. Medical will be on a separate set of repeaters both days, deigning to touch base with us lowly logistics mortals when they need our help.  LOL

Currently we've even got 2 hams who volunteered to do double duty on Saturday, relocating from rest stop #1 & #2, over to rest stop #6 and #7 (south and north end of River Road route).  But Rest stop #5 (Post Road, just off IH-35, south of FM306 in New Braunfels) is still unassigned. We also have nobody covering the Comal County Fairgrounds finish line on Saturday.

Many of the rest stop locations closer to New Braunfels can be worked using only a hand held radio on 2 meters, so even if all you have is one of those Baofeng HT's, you can still be involved in this event.

We've got hams driving in from the  Houston area, Austin, Pipe Creek and even Kerrville to help.  With all the hams in the San Antonio area, we ought to be able to field a full complement of hams, with a reserve list of more willing to serve.

My thanks to those who are already helping this weekend.

Re: license renewal

CrayL

Tony,

You can renew online after logging into the FCC ULS web page:  http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls/index.htm?job=home

If you are an ARRL member, you can renew thru the ARRL website - they will process it through the FCC for you, no fees other than the standard renewal fees if applicable.  Haven't do so yet, but I would guess it's probably about the same as logging into the ULS website.

If you want to mail in a renewal, a link to FCC Form 605 with the instructions is:

You can print the instructions and the form from there.  The form 605 itself is on pages 10 & 11.  I believe there is no renewal fee for standard amateur license (non-vanity) and a $16.10 fee for Vanity renewal.  You may have to search around the FCC web site to confirm that status for sure.

Re: June SARC Minutes

Well it was already announced in the meeting and everything, it’s pretty much “out there.” I did notice after attending the AARO meeting last night that their Secretary’s report was MUCH less detailed than mine. I am making mine quasi transcripts (hey, why attend the meeting with the transcript is available lol), I may be take the idea from my colleague and begin to scale down.

But, don’t worry, gates are designed to keep the honest folks honest. I have gone visiting many a friends in gated communities and waited for someone to drive in and then drove in behind them. And with a homeland security and military background, I (and anybody with nefarious intent…they can be pretty ingenious) could think of a dozen other ways in, but, I won’t post those ;)

Your other choice, vs attachments, would be to upload the minutes in a file, such as PDF, to the Yahoo group's file area, then notify the group that you have done so.

Not sure I would've included the storage gate access code in such a publicly available document. But hopefully everyone on this list is honest. Of course there's also reason why we hire security for the Radio Fiesta also. :(

Are we having fun yet?

Oops, lost a day - should have said, I'll be at the meeting tomorrow evening!  Oh Well!!

Cray / K5MUG

Qrp wattmeter/tuner

CrayL

just by chance, if anyone has a 5 or 10w wattmeter and/or tuner for qrp ( I'm using a Wilderness Sierra, 1 to 5 watt) I could borrow for a week or so until my order arrives, I would appreciate it.

Really like to work it on an outing this weekend, and my tuner has 30w scale, and 20 & 15 barely indicates, 12 & 10 do not move at all (probably about 1 to 1 1/2w out).

I'll be at the meeting tonight at Grady's.

Thanks,

Cray / K5MUG

Re: June SARC Minutes

Esmeralda V

They don’t allow attachments! Hm. Here is the text.

SARC General Meeting

June 12, 2014

Meeting was called to order by Bob Rod (K5AUW) at 6:55 PM.

Presentation by Bob Rod (K5AUW) “Common Myths about Standing Wave Ratio.”

Voltage Standing Wave Ratio = SWR. A Standing Wave is a wave of energy such as light or sound or RF or that appears to be standing still. This is because waves of energy are flowing at opposite directions. SWR is the ratio of the max to minimum voltage in the feed line. If you have high SWR and you are not using good coax, the extra voltage will punch a hole through the insulation.

Myth: High SWR will cause radiation or RFI. SWR will not, by itself, generate RFI. Radiation is caused by a mixing of balanced and unbalanced antennas. A device called a BALUN (balanced/unbalanced) to use antennas and feed lines of different types.

Myth: a SWR of 2:1 will prevent the radio from getting out. False, on HF band the use of high quality feed-line will allow SWR to be high without an effect. Use the highest quality, lowest loss feed-line that is practical. RG-58 is okay on 80 meters but wastes most of your power on UHF. A Hard line is great for UHF but a waste of money on 80 meters. Not all coax is equal.

Myth: Antenna tuner does not tune the antenna it just fools the transmitter into thinking the antenna is tuned. False, it does not tune the antenna unless the tuner is at the antenna feed point. A tuner near the transmitter does not get rid of high SWR, it creates a conjugate match between the transmitter and the antenna, allowing maximum efficiency.

Myth: Reflected power caused by high SWR goes back into the radio and burns up the finals. Reflected power cannot go back into the finals. High SWR can cause your finals to burn but not but that is because the reflected power reaches the radios coax connector and is reflected back to the antenna. Older solid state radios without high SWR protection will eventually burn up if connected to a high SWR antenna system.

Bob Rod (K5AUW) offered a correction to the minutes: Lew Archer (WOYVY) will operate the GOTA Station at Field Day. Motion to approve the minutes (as amended) by Rich Kreiser (NOJBF) seconded by Bryce Weathersby (KE5KFD). Motion carries

Treasurer's report is the same as last month. Motion to approve Treasurer's report by Bryce Weathersby (KE5KFD) seconded by Esmeralda Valague (KE5YFH) motion carries.

Field Day: Richard Elder can be reached at 210-241-4600. Friday the 27th at 3:30 – Meet at the club storage area. If coming up NW Military from 410 – Turn Left on West Avenue and Right on Patricia. The gate code is 1716. Look for the 500 series area of the facility. The club needs pickup trucks to bring things to the site. The club trailer has a 2 inch ball. After loading, the club will caravan to Shavano Park Municipal facility. There will be various generators available. Bring extension cords, power strips, box fans and coax cable. There is a 10x20 shelter available that will be setup on Friday. After Friday setup everyone goes to Bill Miller at Huebner and Lockhill Selma. The generators will not be left out but left on the transport trucks. Saturday morning meet at 8:00 to set up generators and antennas. The club needs a lot of help to set up the 40 and 80 meter dipole. All should be operational by 12 noon and we will be operating all day Saturday through the night. Mike Check (K5UCQ) will bring a pop-up trailer with AC for a cooling station. Saturday evening around 6 PM – Rudy's BBQ will be served. Sunday morning we operate until 10:00 am, tear-down around 10:30/11:00. Then everything needs to be packed up and taken to the storage area. The club is hoping for 500+ contacts. There will be 4 computers and a hub/server to network together to reduce repeat contacts. There will be voice, would love some CW (extra points), if you have a digital station – bring it. Satellite also welcome. Red Cross officers, City Council, the media and others are welcome to stop by. If you have an antenna, bring it. Antenna analyzers will be available. The club will need to decide soon if we will officially be a 2, 3 or 4 station operation. GOTA does not count for points but is good outreach for non-licensed people.

Rowena: Next month (in July after the meeting), Rowena will be looking for dealers and speakers for Ham Fest. Need input for new speakers, etc. Presentation for speakers is 45 minutes.

Motion to adjourn by Esmeralda Valague (KE5YFH) seconded by Bryce Weathersby (KE5KFD) motion carries. Adjourn at 7:45 PM.
