My father, Louis Guido Jr., N5JKH, passed away Friday evening. His support was very instrumental in the building of many Packet Radio nodes and networks throughout South Texas from 1986 until 1995.

A Rosary will be recited on Monday, February 7 at 7:00pm at San Francesco di Paola Catholic Church.

The Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, February 8 at 10:00am at San Francesco di Paola Catholic Church. Interment will follow the Funeral Mass at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.

I was in Houston this weekend for the Houston Vintage Radio Association's annual convention, and there were some technical programs presented that would be really good for the Ham Fiesta.

1. "The Evolution of Detectors", by Dr. Bob Botto. Crystal detectors up to transistors, with some rare items you will likely not see anywhere else. Bob is very knowledgeable and explains the evolution clearly, in 28 logical steps.

2. "Making a Triode Vacuum Tube in Your Garage", by Ron Soyland. Ron cobbled together his own manufacturing line to make tubes out of Pyrex, nickel wire, copper wire, tungsten wire, and other materials. He taught himself to blow glass, and built a glass lathe along with a vacuum pump.

3. "The Eimac Story", by Tom O'Brien. Tom has a collection of Eimac glass triodes, from the earliest (1936) to the most recent (6C21), and follows the history of a very successful company built by two California hams. Some of the most important tubes will be shown, along with some other vacuum devices from Eimac.

We knew our facility cost increased but kept cost the same to keep folks coming. From the rough figures, it sounds like we lost money, but we knew that was probable.

Next, we will see how much of a price increase is needed to get out of the red next year.

Kudos to all involved! Nice location, clean and neat, food and snacks
reasonably priced, tables spaced nicely, etc. ATM a plus. Probably need a
different location for the testing due to conflicts with the rear entry/exit

Nanosatellite's Beacon Signal

On Wednesday, January 19 at 1630 UTC, engineers at Marshall Space
Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama confirmed that the NanoSail-D
nanosatellite ejected from Fast Affordable Scientific and Technology
Satellite (FASTSAT). According to NASA, the ejection event occurred
spontaneously and when engineers at Marshall identified and analyzed
onboard FASTSAT telemetry; the ejection of NanoSail-D also has been
confirmed by ground-based satellite tracking assets.

NASA is asking radio amateurs to listen on 437.270 MHz for the
signal and verify NanoSail-D is operating. Hams should send
information to the NanoSail-D dashboard via the web at,
http://nanosaild.engr.scu.edu/dashboard.htm .

NASA said that the NanoSail-D science team is hopeful the
nanosatellite is healthy and can complete its solar sail mission.
"This is great news for our team," said Dean Alhorn, NanoSail-D
principal investigator and aerospace engineer at the Marshall
Center. "We're anxious to hear the beacon which tells us that
NanoSail-D is healthy and operating as planned. The science team is
hopeful to see that NanoSail-D is operational and will be able to
unfurl its solar sail." As of Thursday, January 20, the NanoSail-D
dashboard is reporting that beacon data has been received, but NASA
still wants amateurs to track and report the signals.

On December 6, 2010, NASA triggered the planned ejection of
NanoSail-D from FASTSAT. At that time, the team confirmed that the
door successfully opened and data indicated a successful ejection.
Upon further analysis, however, the team found no evidence of
NanoSail-D in low-Earth orbit (LEO), leading them to believe
NanoSail-D remained inside FASTSAT. The FASTSAT mission has
continued to operate as planned with the five other scientific
experiments operating nominally.

"We knew that the door opened and it was possible that NanoSail-D
could eject on its own," said FASTSAT Project Manager Mark
Boudreaux. What a pleasant surprise we had Wednesday morning when
our flight operations team confirmed that NanoSail-D is now a free
flyer."

If the deployment is successful, NASA said that NanoSail-D will stay
in LEO between 70 and 120 days, depending on atmospheric conditions.
NanoSail-D is designed to demonstrate deployment of a compact solar
sail boom system that could lead to further development of this
alternative solar sail propulsion technology and FASTSAT's ability
to eject a nanosatellite from a micro-satellite -- while avoiding
re-contact with the FASTSAT satellite bus.

What they did not do, was put the real teeth in it! Which is the phrasing used by some other cities, such as, if you are involved in a MVA while texting, that results in injury or death, the fine is xxx or xxx time in jail! If the accident involves the injury or death of a minor, the fine is xxxxxxxxxxx and xxxxxxxxxxxx days in jail.

Cities that have used that phrasing, have actually seen a significant reduction of urban accidents!

Yes, it is law, but virtually unenforceable by police. It's another "feel

SEC. 19-255 REGULATING THE USE OF HAND-HELD MOBILE
COMMUNICATION DEVICES WHILE DRIVING.
(a) In this section:
(1) HAND-HELD MOBILE COMMUNICATION DEVICE means a
text-messaging device or other electronic, two-way communication
device that is designed to receive and transmit voice
communication, text or pictorial communication, or both, whether
by internet or other electronic means. The term includes a mobile
telephone, and a personal digital assistant (PDA).

(2) TEXT MESSAGE means a two-way communication (whether realtime
or asynchronous) in which data (composed in whole or in part
of text, numbers, images, or symbols) is sent, entered, or received
by a method other than by voice and transmitted through either a
short message service (SMS) or a computer network.

(3) WIRELESS TELEPHONE SERVICE means two-way, real time
voice telecommunications service that is interconnected to a public
switched telephone network and is commonly referred to as
cellular service or personal communication service.
(b) A person commits an offense if the person uses a hand-held mobile
communication device to send, read, or write a text message, view pictures
or written text, whether transmitted by internet or other electronic means,
engage in gaming or any other use of the device, besides dialing telephone
numbers or talking to another person, while operating a moving motorvehicle.
This ordinance shall not apply to public safety personnel in the normal
course and scope of performing their duties.

(c) It is an affirmative defense to prosecution of an offense under this
section if a hand-held mobile communication device is used:
(1) while the vehicle is stopped, out of the moving lanes of the
roadway;
(2) strictly to engage in a telephone conversation, including dialing or
deactivating the call;
(3) as a global positioning or navigation system that is affixed to the
vehicle;
(4) to communicate with an emergency response operator, a fire
department, a law enforcement agency, a hospital, a physician's
office, or a health clinic regarding a medical or other emergency
situation to prevent injury to a person or property;
(5) in the reasonable belief that a person's life or safety IS III
immediate danger; or (6) solely in a voice-activated or other hands-free
mode.
(d) Only warning citations may be issued for the first 90 days following
the effective date of this Ordinance so that an educational effort by the
City of San Antonio may be conducted to infonn the public about the
importance and requirements of this new Ordinance. Thereafter, a person
convicted of an offense under this section shall be punished by a fine of up
to $200.
(e) An offense under this section is not a moving violation and may not be
made a part of a person's driving record or insurance record.
(f) In addition to enforcement by a peace officer of the City of San
Antonio, this section may be enforced by a peace officer of another entity,
including those employed by school districts, duly authorized to issue
traffic citations within the City of San Antonio.

SECTION 3. That the remainder of CHAPTER 19 of the City Code of San
Antonio, Texas will remain in full force and effect, save and except as
amended by this Ordinance.
