Hal N4GG presented this to the North Fulton Amateur Radio League last evening. This is a replica of a 1910 rotary spark-gap transmitter AND IT WORKS!!!!! The video is a little over an hour long, and is a great presentation, however if you want to just watch the transmitter in action go to about 1 hr 5 mins and watch from there. This project took Hal over 2500 hours to complete. It weighs in excess of 70 pounds! It is a beautiful piece of antique radio gear and when you hear it for the first time and see that "Blue Lightening" flashing across the spark-gap you'll be seeing "REAL RADIO" in action. Older Working Laptop Available
Gary Harmon
I have an older Dell Latitude laptop for sale or trade or even giveaway if
the need brings tears to my eyes. It works good, holds a two hour charge but has two issues. One, the LAN socket does not work but the internal wireless does. Two, sometimes the screen will go off into horiz-hold-ville but a slap to the back will bring it back. It is loaded with XP Professional and I have the CD and related documents. If you have a need, let me know. 73, Gary H. Harmon, Jr. - K5JWK 6003 Archwood San Antonio, TX 78239-1504 210.657.1549h 210.884.6926c "Retirement means everyday is a Saturday except Sunday." Re: Texas VHF-FM Society Polls TX Hams
Larry Higgins
Hi, guys: The question before us is both political and technical. In so far as I can tell, only the Utah VHF Society has done their engineering homework on this issue. They have answered numerous technical questions on their web site at: http://utahvhfs.org/.
The political question is this: Do you agree that digital stations should have priority over analog assignments for repeater coordination? That is, they would be allowed to go to the head of the line, by creating new pairs out of simplex channels. The Utah group (I think) is sticking with the 20 kHz pairs that we use in Texas. They assign digital 2 meter repeaters in the same manner as analog repeaters. In their technical section, they point out that only one (1) digital channel will fit in a single 20 KHz 2-meter slot. Ideally, 2 adjacent 20 KHz slots might allow a 3rd repeater. On 440 MHz, 25 KHz analog channels now in use here and in Utah will work fine. But the notion that 2 digital repeaters can be placed in a single 25 KHz slot is conclusively shot down, because of consumer grade radio frequency instability. Have a look at what Utah has done, before you vote! 73, Larry Higgins, W5EX Former Pres., etc etc. Tx VHF FM Society and the San Antonio Radio Club. Fw: League request with S 1755
David F <davidftx@...>
----- Forwarded Message ----
From: ARRL STX Section <memberlist@www.arrl.org> To: davidftx@swbell.net Sent: Thu, March 11, 2010 9:47:20 AM Subject: League request with S 1755 From Dr. Woolweaver: As you are aware, S 1755 the "Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Enhancement Act of 2009" unanimously passed the Senate December 14, 2009 and was transmitted to the House of Representatives for consideration. S 1755 is assigned to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, the same committee where HR 2160 current sits with 35 co-sponsors. Our Washington team has decided that since S 1755 has already successfully cleared one chamber that we will now focus on this version of the bill. The strategy decided upon is to ask all ARRL members to contact Chairman Henry Waxman (CA-30) and Congressman Joe Barton (TX-05) urging them to bring S 1755 up for consideration by the Committee and forward it on to the full House for a vote. Because of the bipartisan nature and passage of S 1755 in the Senate, we believe this strategy offers an excellent opportunity to get this important legislation passed. To help with this, we again need the assistance of each of our members. This is a slightly different tactic than the familiar request being made to each ARRL member's home district House member. We are asking that ARRL members contact the leadership of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce urging them to bring up S 1755 for consideration and passage. We would like to keep this issue on the "front burner" of the Committee leadership, so we are asking that ARRL members fax letters directly to Congressmen Waxman and Barton . Their office fax numbers are: Chairman Waxman 202-225-2525 Congressman Barton 202-225-1919 We also ask that they fax copies of their letters to our consultants in Washington at Chwat & Co at 703-684-7594. Members can read the Webstory at www.arrl.org/news/stories/2010/03/10/11385/?nc=1 A copy of a sample letter is linked from the web story. A copy is also attached to this email. We are trying to generate as many letters on this as quickly as possible, so thanks in advance for your assistance on helping expedite this request. As always, please contact my office if I can assist you with this project. Your efforts do make a difference! 73 Dan Henderson, N1ND Regulatory Information Manager ARRL, the national association for Amateur Radio(tm) 860-594-0236 dhenderson@arrl.org -------------------------------------------------------------------- ARRL South Texas Section Section Manager: Lee H. Today's "Checkout Party" at Krueger Middle School
Tom O'Brien
SARC President Lew Archer and I arrived at Krueger at about 11:30 and checked in with the front desk. Mr. Claughton was on "Lunchroom Duty", whatever that is. Sounds scary, doesn't it?
He took us over to the modular building where the stack of radio gear awaited. The gear had lots of dust but no cobwebs and probably no cooties. We started by going through the big pieces and identifying them by manufacturer, model number, and serial number. For each item, we took one or two identifying photos and noted its condition. We were able to test only a few items (power supplies and an oscilloscope). By about 2:30 we had covered all of the equipment items. We were not able to identify the RG-8 coax cables that came through the ceiling (one with blue tape and one with red tape around the end), although we ran an antenna analyzer sweep on them. We also took some outdoor photographs of details of the two towers and their installed antennas. Mr. Claughton checked his files and found no documentation of the radio club's equipment. Our next step is to enter all of our notes and photographs into a report for the school. Along with that, we will attempt to find technical documentation for each piece of equipment. At tomorrow night's club meeting, I plan to give Lew a CD containing today's photographs. The documentation will be a challenge, and we will ask club members for help in obtaining it. Our goal is to help Krueger get the station up and running by the start of the Fall semester. They already have two teachers newly licensed (last Saturday), and hope to have several more licensed by Fall. I think today's Checkout Party was a success. It certainly has identified some more work that is needed. 73TomAB5XZ

This work party should take no more than three hours (from start of lunch until we go home). I don't know how many pieces of equipment there are, but I think it all fits in a 6 foot mobile rack. It is important to get the equipment inventoried and checked out so we (and the school) can know what needs to be added, connected, or repaired. Please give this work party some consideration, as it is a worthwhile way to spend a few hours. I'm told that the station was a project of SARC some years ago, and every project needs some follow-up. What I would like to do is meet at Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches on Austin Highway, about 11 AM. To sweeten the deal, I will buy your lunch if you come for the work party.
