Re: Address of Field Day Site - correction / update

Lee Besing

Google disagrees with the address of "300 S. Callaghan Rd." Google
Maps says that it ought to be around 200 block of S. Callaghan Rd
instead. Here is a street level traffic shot of the Academy using
the 232 S. Callaghan Road address.

Emacs!

But the official SA City Website says the address truly is 300 S.
Callaghan Road...

The San Antonio Fire Training Academy is located at 300 S.
Callaghan, approximately one block North of Highway 151, inside Loop 410.

Field Day Setup Crew

Shane O'Neal <shane@...>

If you are planning to help out from 8am to 1pm on Saturday, June 27th as
part of the setup crew, or on Sunday, June 28th from 10:30am until
whenever we finish as part of the teardown crew, please send an email to
shane@ns5d.com indicating your intention to do so. Those who already
received an email from me today saying they were on the list do not need to
resubmit this info.

The duties will include, but not be limited to:

- Stringing up antennas
- Running extension cords
- Setting up tables and chairs
- Carrying stuff
- Cleaning up stuff

The setup and teardown crews will receive:

- Lunch, provided by Chuck W5API and myself
- Sodas and Bottled Water
- My extreme gratitude

We need to try to get an accurate headcount for these crews, so we will know
how many mouths to feed. If you plan to show up early for Field Day just to
observe or to setup your own station (Station Captains), that is fine too,
but only those who identify themselves to me in advance and show up at the
designated hour to help setup the site will get lunch.

Please check out the clubs web site at http://W5SC.org for complete information on Field Day 2009!

I think the scope and size of this event shows the deep commitment that the Area's Amateur Radio operators have for emergency communication.

Field Day 2009 Looms Large as SA Hams Prepare for Mega-Event

by Shane O'Neal NS5D

Field Day 2009 is nearly upon us, and preparations are underway to make this the largest, most successful Field Day event in San Antonio's history. This is thanks to the participation of AARO, SARC, ROOST, SARO, Hill Country REACT, QCWA and many other organizations and individuals, operating jointly under the banner of Bexar County ARES.

Field Day 2009 is expected to draw record numbers of operators and will feature many different bands and modes of operation, including CW, SSB, PSK-31, FM and ATV as a Class F (EOC) station. The total number of transmitters to be operated has yet to be determined but will number at least six.

New Proposed Texas Legislation

David Bowles

There is new legislation being proposed and considered that exempts certain radio antennae, flagpoles and solar panels from CC&Rs. I believe that passage of this bill would be beneficial to hams that are currently prevented from installing antennae on their property due to covenants and other restrictions.

Links to the history and text of the bills can be found here:

WEST GULF DIVISION LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

CC&R RELIEF BILLS

The West Gulf Legislative agenda is at a critical stage as we attempt
to obtain passage of Senate Bill 1552 and House Bill 4637, but there
may be good news soon! We should have a good idea of our status by
Monday, April 20th, 2009.

There is a new website for the West Gulf 's legislative efforts, which
will become active with the first update on Saturday or Sunday.

http://www.westgulflegislation.org.

PLEASE CHECK OUT THE NEW WEBSITE ON SUNDAY.

An update will be posted on the new web site over the weekend and
future updates will be posted there until the end of the 2009
legislative session. On Sunday, look for a request for membership
action.

Depending on what occurs on Friday and Saturday, each of you may need
to take action, but until you see a request on the new website or
receive another email from us, no action is necessary at this time.

Everyone did a superb job when we asked for help with the cell phone
bills, and we may need another heavy response, but we will not know
until Saturday or as late as Monday, April 20, 2009.

If action is needed, a notice with full details will be posted at
www.westgulflegisla tion.org. A West Gulf BLAST BULLETIN will also be
sent.

Thank you for your continued support.

The friend who sent me this item posed the question,
"I wonder if this was a feeler by the 'religion" of "peace' "?

Off Topic - Free Classified Ads for Hams

Lee Besing

This is a one time announcement, that I felt might be of general
interest to the hams who subscribe to this list. I won't be
repeating it, and any responses should be sent direct to me, either
at "info@sanantoniohams.org" or "lee@besing.com". Just wanted to let
you know I've added two new features to my web site
www.sanantoniohams.org and started an electronic newsletter for hams.

Feel free to hit "delete" if you are not interested further, you
won't hurt my feelings.... 73 de Lee N5NTG

The News Blog Area
Most of you already know about the Blog are of the website. We're
allowing other hams to be able to post new club news or topics direct
to the site now. Anyone can register (free) to post comments to
existing topics, but if you want to be able to post your own club
news, etc., contact me direct and we'll make it happen. We recently
enabled ARRL's Texas Legislative Action folks up in Austin (KE5ISX)
access to begin posting news about proposed bills before the Texas
House or Senate that we (the hams) need to either support or
oppose. Look for those postings to begin soon. www.sanantoniohams.org/blog

Monthly Email Newsletter - Ham Radio Info Only
I've also created a Ham Radio email list for a monthly
newsletter. Currently I have about 300+ hams, mostly from the San
Antonio area, with a few from outside that area. I know this list
covers a wide part of Texas, and some of you aren't in SA. But if
you want to get my monthly newsletter from San Antonio Hams, contact
me off this list to be added. Most of the issues will be local to
the SA area, but some will pull from the Blog where legislative or
other issues affect us all.

The Classified Ad Area
Now you can post free classified ads for any ham radio or computer
related items, free of charge, for up to 30 days. You can post up to
750 words of text, and up to 4 photos / images if you desire to show
what it is that you want to pawn off on some other unsuspecting ham,
oops, I meant to say tearfully separate yourself from that valuable
item. And you don't need to be in San Antonio to use this free service.

One person's junk, is another person's treasure, thus the reason we
have Ham Radio Swapfests year around. But what happens between those
events? Got some extra / unused Ham Radio gear you want to sell or
trade? Looking to buy some used gear? Post a new Classified, or
Browse our Classifieds posted by other hams.

SanAntonioHams.org reserves the right to decline service to anyone
for any reason. This is a free site, sponsored by N5NTG, not
affiliated with any individual ham radio club or organization. We are
not responsible for what you buy, so the old saying "Buyer Beware"
applies. Let us know, however, if you feel you got ripped off, or if
someone is falsely advertising something for sale or trade using this
free service.

At this time, all classified ads are free. We reserve the right to
change this policy in the future, but don't expect to. This site is
focused on Amateur Radio / Ham Radio items and topics, but for now,
we'll leave such restrictions open until we see if it gets abused. No
postings offering anything illegal, sexual, or dealing with alcohol
or tobacco will be permitted. We're really not wanting to become the
next job search site, or Apartment / House hunting site, but we won't
turn those down until we figure out what direction our visitors want
to move toward.

This Classified Ad section is under development and thus perhaps
subject to change as we add / remove features. Default max length of
any posted ad is currently set at 30 days. If you sell / trade your
item, please update your ad, or withdraw it when no longer needed. If
you find what you're looking for, please cancel your ad. Thanks, and
have a fun time exploring this area once more ads get posted. Contact
the webmaster, N5NTG, via <mailto:info@sanantoniohams.org>email if
you have problems or questions with this site.

All ads will be moderated to prevent obvious fraud, but I'll be
fairly lenient while we get the usage up and running. As it says on
the web site, if you want to suggest a new category, simply suggest
it to me and we'll consider it.

So far, here are the categories I've created.....

Gil will be missed by many in the Amateur Radio Community of South Texas.

His tireless work as a Volunteer Examiner for many years will be remembered
by all who attended one of his test sessions.

One thing I admired about Gil is that he provided test sessions for many
clubs without regard to club politics. His selfless dedication to
testing foucused on providing a comfortable setting for testing, building
solid teams of VE's and making sure that the paperwork was always sent in as
soon as possible after the test.

For many in the area, he was the first person to shake your hand and welcome
you to Amateur Radio after passing your test.
