Just FYI....

I just heard that Bob W2IK is heading west to Garner State Park,
which is a county that doesn't have much of a ham population, so it
would be a great contact for filling in that blank.

Texas QSO Party is This Weekend!

David F <davidftx@...>

The Texas QSO party is this weekend.  This is a very civilized contest where the object is to work Texas Counties.

DATES and TIMES:  Saturday September 27th from 0900 Texas Daylight Savings Time until 2100 TDST.  You don't have to stay up all night to work this contest.  Sunday September 28th from 0900 TDST until 1500 TDST.  Very doable hours.

The Point:  The point is to work as many Texas Counties as possible.  You can work the same station on different bands.  Look for Rovers, mobiles who drive from county to county and work as many stations as they can until they get to the next county.  Look for KK5LO, Walter Hock from Hondo as one of the mobiles.  See the rules here:  http://txqp.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=114:rules08&catid=38:rules&Itemid=58

Good logging resources here:  http://txqp.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=section&layout=blog&id=8&Itemid=59

Obie, N5VYS, Jay, K0BCN and I will be W5RTA at the STXDXCC Club Station in Bandera County.  Anyone who wants to work the TQP from that location for a couple of hours contact me.

Everyone probably new about this except me--

I always have a hard time finding in line SO-239 and Drake .208 plugs.  I still can't find solder, in line SO-239s but this place has crimp, in line SO-239 (page 1) and Collins/Drake .208 3 conducter plugs (page 3).

For qualification you have to send an email to contact@vk9dwx. de which must

Volunteer Opportunity for Hams or Non Hams

David F <davidftx@...>

Teri, KC5BJI, will be attempting to fill reception center and shelter ARES assignments as soon as the City decides where these facilities will be located.  This appears to be scheduled for later today and we should know more as a result of the late morining GDEM conference call.
Outside of the strict ARES umbrella is an volunteer opportunity for someone who wants to help and doesn't have an amateur radio license.  Shane, NS5D, wearing one of his many hats, has need for a volunteer to help the COSA communications organization by maintaining and operating a battery charging station.  This is a bigger deal than it sounds.  The City is using 100's of trunked handhelds for emergency communications.  Many of these radios are checked out to other agencies.  The battery life is less than desirable and these radio users bring them back in a short period of time for a fresh battery.  Sometimes this is just three hours of use.
Shane could use a willing teenager, spouse, neighbor or anyone willing to help maintain this charging station.  It is currently located at the ARCC but is subject to being moved.  Any volunteers need to have there own transportation.  Call me on 210-710-8721 or Shane on 210-473-4847 to volunteer.

Re: 6 Meters

L. Upton <k1stx@...>

As Lee stated, the 6 meter repeaters and nets in the area are all FM.  There is some activity occasionally on the SSB side, but you could listen for days and not here anything!

From my understanding, which is often wrong, most SSB work is weak signal DX, around 50.100 to 50.300!

Houston has a couple of very active 6meter repeaters, and I believe one is Echolink capable.

Hope this helps!

Re: 6 Meters

Lee Besing

The radio nets listed at www.sanantoniohams.org say there is a 6m net
on FM, if that's any help.
6 Meter Local Radio Nets
http://www.sanantoniohams.org/nets/index.htm
Monday @ 8:00pm 52.525 mHz FM - Voice Marty, KB5MJC Southwest Texas 6
Meter Net.

Net control recommends using vertical polarization, although some
operators have been known to flip over to horizontal while on the
net. (Does that mean they are laying down?) There is no particular
ham club affiliation or sponsor, just a bunch of radio operators who
enjoy talking on 6 meters.

Lee,

I sent Chris a reply, but, the San Antonio Link may be down, since it hubs with Austin!  They were having issues with it last night when I was leaving for Houston!  It was double or triple crosslinked with the SW Lynx, and was locking up!

Cannot hit it today at all!

If the SW Lynx link with the Salt Grass is up, he can also try the 146.96 - pl 162.2!

Steve sometimes, although usually at night, has the two running together!  I love it when that is done, since driving around the state, I can pretty much talk from the CC area all the way to Lufkin!

Catch ya later!
