Ham Radio on Linux August 8th Presentation
davidftx <davidftx@...>
To: All San Antonio Area Amateur Radio Operators & Organizations.
Joe Barr, K1GPL, will be giving his presentation "Ham Radio on Linux" at 7pm on August 8, 2007 at the Nail Technical Center, on the campus of San Antonio College. Joe previously gave this presentation to the Austin Linux Users Group earlier this year. Using computers running Linux, Joe remotely accesses his HF rig at home running Flgigi (http://www.w1hkj.com/Fldigi.html) and making contacts on PSK31 and other PSK Modes. Fldigi, written by David Freese, W1HKJ, is capable of operating CW, several versions of PSK and other digital modes. Fldigi is written for the Linux operating system and is available on his website. There is a "Live CD" with Fldigi on it so that individuals running a Microsoft operating system can boot off of the Live CD and try Fldigi. Fldigi has been featured in QST magazine. All area Amateurs are invited to attend this presentation. More information will be posted on http://www.satlug.org and will be updated as additional information is available. Feel free to forward this to other area Amateurs Radio Operators you feel might be interested in this presentation. SATLUG's meetings are hosted by the Computer Information Systems Department of San Antonio College and meets on the 2nd Thursday of odd-numbered months and the 2nd Wednesday of even-number months at 7:00pm in room 025B of the Nail Technical Center. For any questions regarding the presentation "Ham Radio on Linux", please contact me, Jim Wells, W5CPA at president@... and I will do my best to answer your questions. For general questions regarding SATLUG, please visit www.satlug.org/FAQ and see if your question is answered there before e-mailing me your question. You are invited to join the SATLUG E-Mail list at www.satlug.org/mailman/listinfo/satlug Thanks and 73, Jim Wells, W5CPA President, San Antonio Linux Users Group. president@...

KE5HBF Had Surgery Today
davidftx <davidftx@...>
Floyd Gordon, KE5HBF, had a mass removed from his throat today. I
talked with his wife earlier this evening and the surgery went better than expected and Floyd is doing fine. He might even get to go home on Tuesday, which is earlier than originally predicted. When he returns home he will not be able to talk for several days, which we all know will be a major blow to someone like Floyd. Get well wishes can be sent to fgordon74@... . K5OLE

Fw: MILITARY BARS HAND HELD CELLULAR PHONES AND HT'S WHILE DRIVING ON POST
RADIO RULES:
MILITARY BARS HAND HELD CELLULAR PHONES AND HT'S WHILE DRIVING ON POST If you are in the United States military or make visits military bases, you must use a hands free cellphone or permanently mounted two-way radio while driving on post. This, according to a revision to the Code of Federal Regulations posted to the VHF Reflector by Howard Gordon, W3CQH. The new rule is effective March 1st. It mandates that all federal installations prohibit the use of cellular phones, P-D-As', and similar communication devices by persons operating motor vehicles, unless used with a hands-free device. Also affected are two-way radios. The new rules say that radio communication devices, hand sets or microphones may only be used by operators if the radio device is mounted to the vehicle. In other words, it has to be a permanent rigid installation and not quick install using double-sided tape or stick-on Velcro fasteners. And banned is the use of walkie-talkies or phones in the direct connect mode to ones head. Also on the no-no list is the use of video technology in any playback mode, by the driver. The only exception is the use of vehicular-mounted navigation systems and the use of tactical radios in tactical vehicles is not subject to this regulation. These new restrictions apply to all personnel on post and to military personnel both on and off post regardless of their duty status. Operators found in violation during the grace period of March 1, 2007 through April 1, 2007 will receive a warning ticket. Beginning April 2nd, violators will be ticketed. Violation of this policy may result in suspension or revocation of post driving privileges, the assessment of points, or a fine. (W3CQH, VHF Reflector)

Re: re Ham Equipment - For Sale Soon!
I received a call from a Richard Garcia who will be in San Antonio the week
after Easter for doctor appointments. He bought a bunch of ham gear years and years ago, with the eye toward equipping his newly built house (near El Paso) with all the cabling pre-wired thru the walls, etc. Well, the house got pre-wired, but Richard never passed his CW portion of the test, and back then, even the Novice License required code. Richard said 20 years later and deciding he will never get his license (despite my arguments to the contrary), he wants to sell off his "stuff". He's got about 5 boxes of "stuff" including mostly Kenwood and Motorola radios, controllers, etc. He started rattling off a list of what he had, and I told him to email it to my "info@..." address. I also gave him Kcomm's contact info and address for possible consignment purposes. He's got HF and VHF stuff, plus more, including antennas. If anyone wants to make a preemptive strike to buy his equipment that has never been used, but isn't new, please call Richard # 956-722-6044. Tell him that Lee sent you. This group is a fine place to ask such questions and you may or may not find what you need. One of the best hamfests in Texas is just a couple of weeks away in Belton, TX. See their website here: http://www.tarc.org/hamexpo/. Belton is a great place to pick up used ham gear and is well worth the two hour drive on Saturday, April 14th. Go early to get what you want. Let us know if you need help with your new equipment when you get it. David Freiberger K5OLE
