Rosendo Guzman <rosendo.guzman@...>

Can the San Antonio Radio Club make another appearance at BSides San Antonio?  This time it will be an interactive outreach.

Not just a few members but as many as we can get from the club and from around the area.  This year's badge is going to be a bare circuit board that will be ready to accept parts.  Parts kits will be on hand for a small fee to populate the boards but we need experienced kit builders to show everyone the proper building techniques.

The transistors and the LEDs need to installed correctly for the kit to work.

Before and during the build we need to advertise the club and the upcoming Field Day event.

Like last year it is just a one-day event.  June 8th, 2019.

https://www.bsidessatx.com/

I really feel events like this can grow the club because these are Amateur Radio type people.

Respond to Rosendo if you want to help.

Field Day assistance. The dictionary defines Field Day as getting enjoyment out of something. So please join us and get some enjoyment out it, PLEASE!

Field Day is coming. Right now it is just about 30 days out. It is always on the last full weekend of June. We will need assistance in all areas for us to have a good if not great Field Day. Some individuals consider it a contest, which it probably really is. I myself consider it a time to have fun as a group, help newer hams to learn some of the proper etiquette of just getting on the air, and of course meeting and greeting any and all participants. Newer hams are sometimes somewhat “scared” to get on the air, to Transmit. One of the other aspects of Field Day is seeing how well you can set up and get operating in times of need; ARES which is Amateur Radio Emergency Services. ARES is a different subject not to be included in this email blast. Anyone interested in ARES could let me know off line. Also getting involved with local events where ham radio operators are needed: walk-a-thons, bicycle rides, horse endurance rides, running marathons, basically any event where they are needs for communications. Please contact me again off-line again for any of those things you might be interested in. These are some of the areas that make ham radio fun.

I almost forgot, we will also be having food. BBQ is a Texas tradition, correct?

If you decide to call me, if your number is not in my phone I will probable not answer. Please leave a message or just text me.

Please come out and join us, PLEASE!

Dear Gary K5JWK,

My error. Sorry. Yeah, I picked up on the varying AC when I went to Google. I am sufficiently unfamiliar with linear amplifiers to know what you would want to vary the AC input to one. I would have thought you could vary the amount of amplification by use of the controls on the linear amplifier. Not a real issue for me at this time.

Best wishes on turning up a variac.

Sincerely,

Harold

Harold, I was the one who posted the WANT for the Variac.  It lets you vary the AC input to a linear or anything else for that matter.

I don’t have an amplifier and am not planning to get one. Consequently, I am unfamiliar with what a Variac even is. Goggle tells me it is a variable transformer. Good to know, but not real useful to me right now.

Description: This Saturday, 11 May, SARC members will be able to celebrate the club’s Centennial in true radio fashion.  This will be the second of FOUR Special Event operations during 2019.  The others will be held in August, and November.

We will be using the new station at San Antonio Museum of Science and Technology.  The station is set up in an office space at the Museum, and is supplied with equipment from the Museum’s warehouse and some donations from SARC members.

The Special Event day will proceed in three parts:

1. Setup, done by a volunteer team headed by Joe Bruno W5AUQ, which will begin at 7:45 AM at the storage facility.  The setup team will move the club’s tower, beam, and rotator to SAMSAT on the club’s trailer.  They will then set up the antenna system, connect it, and test it for proper operation.

2. Operation, done by volunteer operators, will begin at 10 AM when the Museum opens.
For this Special Event, Tom O’Brien AB5XZ will coordinate the station operation.  Logging will be done on a computer provided by Tom O’Brien, and will utilize logging software he provides.  Operators will be given instruction on logging, antenna rotation, and transceiver operation.  SARC members may operate the station between 10 AM and 4 PM, when the Museum closes.  We will use special event call sign W5SC/100.  Other amateurs may operate, but SARC members will have priority.  Operation will be on the 20 meter band using SSB mode.

3.  Teardown, done by a volunteer team headed by Joe Bruno W5AUQ, which will begin at 4 PM.  The teardown team will disconnect the antenna system, disassemble it, and prepare it for transport back to the storage facility.

Contact Joe Bruno to volunteer for the Setup or Teardown team (or both).  jlbruno4433@... or 210.363.9500

Contact Tom O’Brien AB5XZ to sign up for operating time.  There will be plenty of time/room for everybody.  ab5xz@... or 210.845.4966
