Great comments very much appreciated.

Thinking of getting plates for my car, but then I would need to purchase a radio.

Used to be N5WSW now W5JX.

Interesting knowing hurdles others have gone through.

Thank you,

I've had my call sign plate since the 70s, but only for my car. My wife is not a ham. If she was, she'd have here own call sign plates. Haven't had any problems, ever 😎

Also, I have my wife's call on 2 vehicles. They both have TXTag stickers for the toll roads. It appears that their system only allows one vehicle with the one tag, as I always receive a "special" email that something is wrong when I drive the Toyota.

Based on my experiences...

Law enforcement officials may not notice that you have more than one with same plate. That may result in a traffic stop, mostly in smaller towns, thinking your plates were stolen. (Only happened to me twice in the past 30 years, but still, it happened. )

Annual Renewal notices may not happen. You may need to visit a county tax / license branch in person to renew.

I've got 2 vehicles with my call sign plates. When I added the 2nd vehicle in January 2017, the state quit sending me renewal notices by mail for either vehicle.

When I was involved in a minor accident 2 months ago, SAPD officer said my plates were showing up as not valid, even though I had just renewed them the week before.  I still need to visit tgr Bexar County Tax Assessor ofc to see what the story is about that.

And finally, you are somewhat surrendering your privacy because Amateur Radio Callsigns are public information and can be researched via Google online, etc.. Fortunately most non-hams do not know this. Hehe.

Gift card scam

The gift card scam lures members into buying gift cards through spoofed text messages and emails. It begins with a short conversational message such as “Are you there?” that appears to be from a SARC officer or member, but is actually sent from the scammer’s email account. If the recipient responds, the scammer will reply, and the conversation quickly turns into a request to purchase gift cards.

Any time an unsolicited email conversation turns into a request to purchase gift cards, it is a scam. If this happens, discontinue the conversation and delete the message. You can also protect yourself from this scam by carefully examining the sender’s email address. If it differs from the sender’s normal address, stop and delete the message. If unsure, contact the webmaster.

Remember, no club officer will email you with a request to buy gift cards, credit cards, money orders or iTunes cards, etc.

Subject: Fiesta Wildflower Ride - Hams needed on 4/29

The annual Fiesta Wildflower ride is going to be happening this year on Sunday, April 29th. Unfortunately, many of the regular ham volunteers will be helping out with the BP MS 150 bike ride that same weekend.

So, we need to build a new team of ham operators to assist this ride.

Typically the organizer will provide a prepaid, limited amount, Valero fuel card to reimburse the operator at each breakpoin for driving out to their location and back. It's not much, but then again we're not supposed to be getting paid for using our ham radios, are we?

The event will be benefiting the Morgan's Wonderland location, and the start and finish line will be at Rolling Oaks Mall, off of Loop 1604 and Nacogdoches Road. This year they are not having a 100 mile route, so the event should get over by 4 p.m. at the latest.

Expect 7 or 8 breakpoints to be mend, plus net control. We always want more than one person at that control so that you can take a break.

Even though I cannot be there in person, I have agreed to help organize the ham Communications for this event. We normally do not have designated Rovers on the route, but it never hurts if you want to volunteer to sweep the route from your breakpoint up to the next breakpoint to make sure nobody gets lost.

The SAG Vehicles will be coordinated by cell phone through net control. The primary purpose of the ham at the break point is to let neck control know if there are any problems. That could be supply shortages like needing more water or ice, or medical issues.

Please contact me Direct, rather than replying back to the different group email list that I have sent this to. My address is below.

Thank you in advance for considering it. Oh, did I mention that you might get a free t-shirt out of the deal? Haha.

On Sunday, 17 Feb, at 2:00 PM CST, the San Antonio Radio Club will have a

Centennial Photo Shoot at the Alamo. We will recreate (loosely) a 1929 photo from an ARRL convention.

We have obtained a (10-page) permit from the Texas General Land Office to use the front of the Alamo as a backdrop.

All SARC members are invited. If you have a hat or jacket with your call sign, please wear it.

If we get a good photo, we will attempt to get it published in QST and CQ magazines.
