There is NOT a SARC Meeting This Month

Harold Fleischer

This is mostly a repeat of an earlier message. Regardless of whether we are talking Wed or Thurs this week the following is still true:

Eleven times a year this automated reminder is 100% correct.

Once a year this automated reminder is 100% incorrect. This is that once a year occurrence.

There is NOT a SARC Monthly Business Meeting on Wednesday, 7 December 2017, or Thursday, 8 December 2017. SARC does NOT have a December meeting.

The next meeting is 7:30 p. m. on Thursday, 12 January 2017, where the focus will be on Radio Fiesta 2017, which will be on Jan 14, 2017.

SA Rock & Roll Marathon on Sunday, December 4th, help needed

Lee Besing

The AARO ham club has been tasked with providing Hams to assist The Rock & Roll Marathon on Sunday, December 4th, 2016.

We need volunteers at every mile marker, and a few other odd ball locations along the route.  We need about 2 dozen (minimum) volunteers to staff the assigned positions, minimum 1 ham per spot..  We currently have a dozen and some volunteers.

Free t-shirts for all volunteers.

There will be 26 new timer clocks this year!!

Duties include picking up the timing clocks prior to the event on Dec. 2nd at 530-630 pm in LOT B of the Alamo Dome (on back side, off Cherry Street, north of Durango / Caesar Chavez)  , then being on-site (On Sunday)at your assigned location prior to 630 am, ready to turn them on when AA5RO net control gives us the countdown over the radio.

This year’s coordinator is Gilbert Santana N5CDA and you can contact him at rrm@... or 210-323-1860. Emailing Direct is preferred due to tracking of assignments and schedule.

The mile maker locations have changed change from last year because the route has changed slightly. See link below for PDF copy of map.

http://rnr30.compgroup.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/sites/32/2015/03/SA_16_CourseMap_SUN.pdf

So if you have a preference on location, or limitation on time available for the day of the event, please let us know.  We’ll assign locations on first come, first serve, with preferences given for those asking for repeat locations from previous years (to help minimize directional confusion).

Most assignments require being up & on location early morning. Traffic is a mess, and gets worse the closer to 6:30 am.  Mile markers 1 thru 10 are assignments that get done quicker, but you have to be there before 6 am (or earlier) due to road closures.   We get "all access" passes, but you still end up stopping at every barricade to talk with the cops, and explain why you need to get from point A to point B.

Thanks

Gilbert Santana, N5CDA

Since we have a meeting tomorrow night, I'll throw out a request.  I need a mag mount base to test my MP1DXTR vertical whip atop my Subaru Forester instead of on a portable tripod with radials.

Anyone have one available for me to borrow for a few days for the test?  If you do, I would very much appreciate it if you would bring it to tomorrow's meeting.

Thanks,

Re: Mag mount?

JC, it has a standard 3/8-24 threaded connection on the whip/coil assembly. The OEM clamp base for it has a one inch long 3/8-24 hex nut antenna connector to SO239 coax connector assembly.

Thanks, Larry.  Long time no see, good to hear from you!   I'll hang loose until the meeting tomorrow, maybe someone attending will bring one.  If not, perhaps we can sync up somewhere.
Take care,

Veterans Day Special Event Station November 11th

Dear TALARC Members and Friends,

On Friday, Nov. 11, The American Legion Amateur Radio Club will conduct its annual Veterans Day special event from 0900 to 1630 Hours, Eastern Standard Time [1400Z - 2130Z] from Indianapolis. On this day, using the Federal Communications Commission-issued radio club call sign K9TAL, we will honor our fellow veterans in this special on-the-air amateur radio tribute.

Participation in the special event is open to all amateur radio operators. Please invite friends and family who are amateur radio operators to contact the station. All those who QSO with the headquarters station can receive a personalized Special Event Commemorative Certificate and a QSL card from TALARC.

Ham radio operators wishing to contact special event Station K9TAL on Veterans Day should tune to 20 meters: 14.275 MHz (+/- 5 KHz) USB; or to 2 meters: K9DC 147.315 Repeater in Indianapolis; or IRLP Node 9735; or, to 146.46 MHz simplex in Central Indiana. Note: K9TAL will not operate via EchoLink during the special event.

To receive a commemorative certificate and QSL card after working K9TAL, send a 9X12 inch self-addressed stamped envelope to The American Legion Amateur Radio Club, 700 N. Pennsylvania St., Indianapolis, IN 46204. Please allow about three weeks for return delivery.

If you are a Legion radio club member who lives near the K9TAL station, you are welcome to operate on-air during the special event. The station is located at the Legion's National Headquarters, 700 N. Pennsylvania St. in Indianapolis. Access to the building is controlled, so it will be necessary that we know your availability in advance – approximate time and length of stay – in order to get you inside. Interested? Contact TALARC Vice President Bill Sloan, NZ9S, at k9tal@....

HF Relay Operations for the Veterans Day Special Event

To accommodate those who experience difficulty hearing or being heard by K9TAL, you may check in via relay through TALARC members:

Everett, WA3DVO, in Maryland
Bill, KIØCW, in South Dakota

Bill and Everett will operate on the same Special Event HF frequency of 14.275 MHz, +/- 5 KHz.

Other Veterans Day special events hosted by TALARC Members

WB4TAL, American Legion Post 116, the first American Legion Radio Club station in North Carolina will also have a Special Event Station honoring all American veterans who have fought for our freedom. The station will be ready to receive at 9 a.m. EST (1400 UTC) until 4 p.m. EST (2100 UTC) and will be listening on 14.260 MHz (+/- 5 KHz) USB. They have QSL cards made and will QSL with all contacts. The station is located in Fuquay-Varina, N.C., and appears to be the only East Coast special event station. WB4TAL invites all to "Come make contact with us." Contact information for WB4TAL: Kenn Kubacki (KK4OSI) WB4TAL@....

W2UIS, Mark at Wallkill, N.Y., has notified National Headquarters that on Veterans Day, he will be running a D-Star Special Event Station from the Wallkill Public Library from 1 p.m to 4 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. He will use REF001C, 026A, 030C. The local library is being supportive of this activity, and Mark says he hopes "to make ham radio a monthly event there to generate interest locally in Amateur Radio."

Veterans Day Parade this Saturday, Universal City. Ham help needed.

Lee Besing

We're still very short of volunteers to help the Universal City Police Department with this year's parade. HT friendly event.

Please share on other club lists if you don't see that list address above

We'll meet at the UCPD office in the city hall on Universal City Blvd at 9am. Free donuts, coffee, juice, etc, provided by the police department.

After our briefing, we'll drive out to our assignments along Pat Booker Rd and wait for the call to move the pre positioned cones or barricades into place.  More info at briefing.

If you can help, please contact me off list.

Joe Bruno has an excused absence. He's still recovering from a heart attack & surgery from last week. NE Baptist Hospital.

Thanks.

Elecraft OEM mic.

CrayL

Need the loan of an Elecraft OEM mic for a couple days, I'm using a Yamaha CM500 headset and have it working on my KX3 very well, and is working on the Elecraft K3 rear 3.5 Mic connection, but not on the front Mic connection.  I am using an 8-pin to 3.5 adapter so not sure the adapter is working properly.  Others have purportedly have successfully used this connector without mod or menu changes. So, would like to borrow an MH2 OEM mic if anyone has one they would loan to me for a couple days to make sure the front mic  port is actually working properly.

(PS: If this is duplicated in sorts, a previous attempt to send it seemed to disappear.)

Thanks,

Cray / K5MUG
